Finding Hope Amid Seasonal Depression as a Christian

Seasonal depression is one of my banes. During this time of year, depression is an oppressive fog that keeps everything in it still. A persistent gloom that makes even the most vibrant moments feel like stone. As the temperature drops and days grow wearisome, it becomes increasingly difficult to stave off depression’s grasp; I often feel isolated and overwhelmed by its chilling presence.

Seasonal Depression is like a fog that makes it hard to think clearly.

As I struggle against this oppression, my faith in Jesus is the Beacon of Hope. He is our Shepherd and Savior. As a friend, he is seeking out our fellowship. He invites us to come together and heal from the brokenness of life. When I put my faith in Jesus, he promises He will bear all my worries. I find peace and comfort in the Lord through this connection with Him.

As Jesus’ disciples, we can stand up to seasonal depression in several ways. The inclination is to take practical steps rather than turn towards Christ primarily. That is stinking thinking. Our Lord should be the very foundation that guides us in both thought and action. Jesus is the ultimate solution. We are trying to bring real and lasting results by staying connected with God. I call this the “Great Connection.”

Seasonal Depression is like a fog that makes it hard to remember who you are.

The Great Connection & Seasonal Depression

What is the Great Connection? The Great Connection is the intimate daily link we are created to have with our Heavenly Father. I dedicate my mornings to nurturing a profound relationship with my Lord and Savior. This “Great Connection” is sacred and precious, so I wake up early each day to ensure it remains protected.

Baking bread requires, at a minimum, flour and water, so The Great Connection requires prayer and God’s Holy Word. Flour and water need a catalyst to become bread, so it takes more than you can offer to make the Great Connection sweet and holy. We need the Holy Spirit to be poured upon us by The Father and The Son. Luke 10:21–22 reads,

‘[21] In that same hour he [Jesus] rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,
“I thank you,
Father,
Lord of heaven and earth,
that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding
and revealed them to little children;
yes, Father,
for such was your gracious will.
[22] All things have been handed over to me by my Father,
and no one knows who the Son is except the Father,
or who the Father is except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Therefore, the practical matter is having intimate fellowship with Jesus. As disciples of Jesus, we can draw strength from Him during seasonal depression by maintaining a relationship with Him through prayer and studying His Word. This act reveals our genuine trust in Jesus and His promises instead of relying on our capabilities to cope with seasonal depression.

As a Christian, I testify that when I pursue God in relationship, including the regular communication in The Great Connection, God gives me what I need to survive the day. God the Father fills our day with grace-filled moments. He gives us his strength so we can live in hope even during moments of darkness like seasonal depression.

You are Not Alone in Seasonal Depression

You are not alone in your struggles. Jesus is here with you and understands what you are going through—he knows exactly how it feels. He is aware of the most minute details about you. Jesus knows precisely how many strands of hair adorn your head. He understands every ounce of suffering within you and why it exists.

Seasonal Depression is like a fog that makes it hard to find our way.

Jesus is Always Available

Jesus understands what you need to heal, and He is here for you every step of the way. By Him having you, even during the most challenging times, know that you will never be alone again. I can personally testify to God’s presence in life. The Great Connection recharges this truth for us at the beginning of each day, so we can make the most of it.

Through this article, I seek to show you that you are not alone. I, too, battle daily. Even on the day of this article’s creation, my faith in God carries me to craft these words despite my depression. I draft this article to remind myself first. When we recognize and are recognized by Jesus daily, it brings energy to our lives.

Thank you, Jesus, for the small, sweet graces that make daily living in depression a fruitful struggle.

I am Iz. I am a follower of Jesus, seeking to understand the world around me.
